Hiking to the Rhythm of Autumn: Our Suggestions from North to South

With its shimmering colors, autumn delights photographers and hiking enthusiasts alike, offering a fresh perspective on the country. Here is a selection of “Hike & Rail” trails that pair perfectly with the season.

#SafetyTip: During autumn, hunting season is in full swing in various forests across the country. While marked trails remain theoretically accessible, always respect signs indicating that a hunt is underway.

With a View Over the Alzette Valley

11.2 km from Lorentzweiler station to Walferdange station (both on the Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy line).

This route takes you along part of the Alzette Trail, a national hiking path winding through the wooded heights of the valley carved by the river. With minimal elevation gain and many scenic viewpoints, it’s ideal for a relaxed Sunday family outing.

Good to know: A marked fork (CFL 16a) allows you to end the hike early at Heisdorf station, located below the trail.

Natural Beauty Worth the Effort

20.9 km starting from Kayl station (Luxembourg – Bettembourg – Rumelange line). Return from Esch-sur-Alzette station (Luxembourg – Esch/Alzette – Rodange line).

This hike requires planning. Set aside a full day to enjoy it comfortably, with suitable footwear for the distance and forest paths. The steep climbs are rewarded with views of former open-pit mines and nature reserves rich in biodiversity.

Good to know: The hike can be split into two parts: Kayl to Schifflange (8.5 km) and Schifflange to Esch/Alzette (16.7 km).

On the Trail Along the Border

16.2 km starting from Pétange station (Luxembourg – Esch/Alzette – Rodange or Luxembourg – Bascharage-Sanem – Rodange – Athus/Longwy line). Return from Kleinbettingen station (Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon line).

After passing through the town of Pétange, the route joins the national Attert cycle path (PC12). Characterized by rural and forest landscapes, this trail runs along the Belgian border before reaching Kleinbettingen station.

Good to know: Except for a small easily bypassed section along the Chiers in Pétange, the path is suitable for strollers and bicycles.

Royal Route

16.5 km starting from Ettelbruck station, returning from Colmar-Berg station (both on the Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy line).

This route follows the southern loop of the Adrien Ries Trail (Adrien Ries Trail – Hiking and Cycling – Nordstad Luxembourg), named after the jurist and economic expert who passed away in 1991. A passionate hiker, he also authored many tourism publications. Unique feature of this trail: it offers views of Colmar-Berg Castle, residence of the Grand Ducal family—you might even catch a glimpse of them if you’re lucky.

Good to know: You can extend the hike by 2 km to Schieren station.

Take Time to Blend into Nature

6 km starting from Munsbach station. Return from Oetrange station (both on the Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier line).

To conclude this selection, we suggest a shorter walk that’s equally rich in heritage. Historically, you’ll follow the ancient Roman road Kiem. From a nature perspective, the meadows and fields of the beautiful Syre Valley are teeming with birds—observe them quietly, and don’t forget your binoculars.

Good to know: This hike is also suitable for strollers and bicycles. It can easily be combined with CFL Trail 38, Sandweiler-Contern – Munsbach (7.7 km).
