A productive Summer of engineering works for the CFL, in service of their customers
engineering works/projects
//18 September 2025
The CFL and their contractors once again took advantage of the summer school holidays to carry out major engineering works on Luxembourg’s railway network. Transformation, expansion, maintenance… efforts were intensified to prepare for the mobility of tomorrow.Discover in pictures the main operations carried out between July 11 and September 14, 2025.
This summer’s works included the completion of the new Platform II and the full renewal of railway infrastructure over a distance of 900 meters — among other things!
The new platform II stretches over a length of 307 meters and offers multiple access points via stairs and elevators.The second platform is now connected to the tram stop and the surrounding bus station.Canopy, heated shelter, passenger information systems, lighting, public address system, elevators — everything has been designed to welcome passengers with comfort and high-quality service.Extensive earthworks have resulted in a new platform to accommodate the two tracks of the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg, now connected to the new platform.Extensive earthworks have resulted in a new platform to accommodate the two tracks of the existing line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg, now connected to the new platform.The Howald site is characterized by a high concentration of switches. Thirteen were renewed this summer.Signaling, power supply, and telecommunications — all installations were also renewed as part of these operations.Signaling, power supply, and telecommunications — all installations were also renewed as part of these operations.Signaling, power supply, and telecommunications — all installations were also renewed as part of these operations.The old wooden sleepers were replaced with new concrete ones.The old wooden sleepers were replaced with new concrete ones.The old wooden sleepers were replaced with new concrete ones.
Getting closer to the New Luxembourg – Bettembourg Line
With the opening of the new Luxembourg – Bettembourg line scheduled for September 2027, train traffic on the Luxembourg – Esch/Alzette – Rodange and Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz lines will be separated along the entire route between Bettembourg and Luxembourg.
This separation of rail traffic will relieve the major bottleneck that had formed on the Luxembourg – Bettembourg section, where two of the network’s busiest lines converge. From 2027, CFL customers will benefit from even more frequent and more punctual trains thanks to the new line.
500 meters of track from the existing line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg were relocated this summer.500 meters of track from the existing line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg were relocated this summer.This shifting operation made it possible to free up the space needed for the future installation of tracks for the new line.The power supply systems, as well as the signaling and telecommunication networks, were adapted to create the necessary space for connecting the new line.The power supply systems, as well as the signaling and telecommunication networks, were adapted to create the necessary space for connecting the new line.The power supply systems, as well as the signaling and telecommunication networks, were adapted to create the necessary space for connecting the new line.The power supply systems, as well as the signaling and telecommunication networks, were adapted to create the necessary space for connecting the new line.200 rigid inclusions were installed to build the access ramp to the “flyover,” allowing the new line to pass over the existing tracks north of Bettembourg station.Noise barriers were erected over a length of 150 meters to reduce sound disturbances caused by rail traffic.
Rail network maintenance – a CFL trademark
Every year, the CFL carry out maintenance and renewal operations on the rail network to ensure safety and comfort for both customers and staff. Several sections of the network were affected by various works this summer. For example, between Lorentzweiler and Walferdange, 6 km of track and 10,000 sleepers were replaced, along with 14,000 tonnes of ballast.
6 km of tracks were renewed between Berchem and Howald.6 km of tracks were renewed between Berchem and Howald.No fewer than 10,000 sleepers were replaced between Berchem and Howald.No fewer than 10,000 sleepers were replaced between Berchem and Howald.13 km of tracks were renewed between Roodt-sur-Syre and Wecker on the Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier line.22,000 new sleepers were laid this summer between Roodt-sur-Syre and Wecker.The underground structure built as part of the removal of level crossing PN59 in Milbech was shifted this summer……it will serve as an alternative for road traffic after the permanent closure of the level crossing.
During the works, the CFL once again provided a comprehensive replacement bus service, with an average of over 1,100 bus journeys operated daily by more than 200 drivers: Summer on the move: CFL’s 1,100 daily bus challenge
