From the north to the south of the country, from west to east, the CFL offe many ideas for walks to enjoy on your own, with family or friends. Here is a selection of five marked trails, from station to station, to enjoy the benefits of walking during the autumn season.

Presented in the book ‘Hike & Rail’, these 43 routes vary in distance from 4.2 to 34.2 km and are accessible to a wide public. Linking two stations, they offer hikers easy mobility. Another advantage is that trails can be combined if you want to increase your route, alternatively, if you decide to shorten the trail, that’s possible too.

CFL Trail 2: the green Ardennes

Distance: 8.4 km / Departure station: Clervaux – Arrival station: Drauffelt

After crossing the Clerve, the route skirts around Clervaux on the wooded valley sides surrounding the Ardennes town. A landscape forged by the river, with the Irbich stream visible along the way, where the charming village of Munshausen also stands out. On arrival in Drauffelt, this tour can be extended with the CFL Trail 4 Drauffelt – Kautenbach walk (16.2 km). Alternatively, you can return to Clervaux by taking the CFL Trail 3 Clervaux – Drauffelt route (6.7 km) in the opposite direction.

CFL Trail 15: along the river Mamer

Distance: 25,9 km / Departure station: Mersch – Arrival station: Mamer

A day out in the great outdoors, enjoying the beauty of the Mamer valley along this route. Along the river (which flows into the Alzette at Mersch), several mills that were once in operation are worth a look. As are the rock formations and caves that can be seen along the way. Good to know: around 1 km after Kopstal, you can walk to Dommeldange station along the CFL Trail 15a footpath (8.8 km), thus shortening the route.

CFL Trail 26: Contemplating heritage and open-air redevelopment

Distance: 9 km / Departure station: Esch-sur-Alzette – Arrival station: Belvaux-Soleuvre

A tour to admire the successful transformation of Esch-Belval, now a new district with a lively urban, economic and university life that does not deny its industrial heritage. Good to know: you can reach Belval-Université station after the first 3.5 km. You can extend the walk by taking CFL Trail 24 Belvaux-Soleuvre – Belval-Université (4.2 km) or CFL Trail 27 Belvaux-Soleuvre – Oberkorn (4.9 km).

CFL Trail 43: landscapes that you have to earn

Distance: 11.5 km / Departure station: Manternach – Arrival station: Wasserbillig

The lower Syre valley as far as its mouth at the Moselle is well worth a walk. It passes through the Manternacher Fiels nature reserve with its impressive rocky landscape.

The last part of the route leads to the Moselle and follows the river bank via Mertert to Wasserbillig station. The sometimes-steep climbs on this tour promise a demanding walk (sturdy shoes recommended).

CFL Trail 19: on the periphery of the capital
