The winter markets are in full swing between now and the turn of 2025. Several of these events, organised in different towns across the country and in the Greater Region, are accessible by train. Or how to combine the festivities with zen and responsible mobility.

Christmas trees, tents, lights… the installation of the symbolic attires of the Advent period prepares everyone for the atmosphere of the end-of-year festivities. Whether you’re a fan of the genre or a sporadic visitor, winter markets rarely leave young and old indifferent.

Here is a selection of the biggest ones organised in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, all accessible by train from Luxembourg.

Luxembourg City lights up for Winterlights

Five key locations will host winter markets, an ice skating rink and a children’s area. The Luxembourg capital vibrates to the rhythm of the festivities with more than 30 DJ performances on the stage in Wanterpark (Stadtpark) and more than 80 musical events on the stage in Niklosmaart (Place de Paris).

See Santa take to the skies in Saarbrücken (Germany)

Saarbrücken’s capital is decked out in all its finery to welcome visitors, including the world’s only mobile Ferris wheel, some 50 metres high. As for Father Christmas, he’ll be taking to the skies every day at 5pm and 7pm on his reindeer-drawn sleigh above the Saint-Jean market..

In Nancy (France), Saint-Nicolas is king

In Nancy, no fewer than 40 days are dedicated to the patron saint of well-behaved children, and especially of the people of Lorraine. Three villages and five hamlets immerse visitors in a magical atmosphere. Tasty treats, attractions, illuminations, video mapping, artists’ markets, participatory creations, shows and tours… there’s something for everyone. And don’t forget the traditional Saint Nicholas parade on 7 December.

Due to a national civil service strike in France, train traffic is expected to be disrupted throughout the day on Thursday 5 December 2024 between France and Luxembourg. Before travelling to or from France, we kindly ask our customers to check the train traffic situation on www.cfl.lu or via the CFL mobile application.

The sweet pleasures of winter in Brussels (Belgium)

To round off this round of winter activities, we’ll be making a little stopover in the Belgian capital to discover the ‘Plaisirs d’hiver’ and the winter market, held in some of the most beautiful places in Brussels, starting with Grand Place. There’s a programme of events and attractions for everyone.
