Clean trains are a must at the CFL and are among the first impressions customers get of CFL’s services. To ensure that trains always look their best, the CFL have relied since 2018 on a modern train washing facility that has earned recognition beyond Luxembourg’s borders. Here are five facts and insights about this key piece of infrastructure.

1. A Wash Every Three Weeks

On average, each train is washed in the CFL train wash facility every three weeks.

2. Express Wash Program

The fully modernized train washing facility can clean an entire train in just 30 minutes.

3. 92% Less Water

Thanks to innovative technology, a maximum of just 5 litres of water is needed to wash one metre of train length.

4. 99.9% Chemical-Free and pH Neutral

The CFL train wash facility uses environmentally friendly, pH-neutral cleaning agents. The water used during the washing process is collected and biologically treated. At the very end of the process, only a flocculating agent is added to bind the dirt particles dissolved in the water.

5. 14,000 Litres of Recycled Water

The water used to wash the trains comes from a 14,000-litre tank filled with treated and recycled water. Only water losses caused by evaporation and carryover need to be replenished.
