Several key figures summarise the CFL’s activities, such as the number of passengers carried (31,3 million in 2024), the number of trains running every day on the railway network (1,000 passenger and freight trains) or the number of handling operations at the Bettembourg-Dudelange intermodal hub (219,730 in 2024).
Other figures – less well known to the general public – also reflect the activity of a fast-growing Group, driven by demand from private and professional customers:
- Every day, CFL trains offer 276,705 seats to serve customers… and the planet, to encourage the decarbonisation of transport.
- In 2024 – and for the second year running – the CFL Trains and Equipment Service Maintenance Centre (CM) ensured 98% daily availability of rolling stock to serve customers.
- 30% of the vehicles in the FLEX carsharing service are electric.
- 1,045 km is the length of the rail motorway linking Bettembourg and Le Boulou in the south of France in 15 hours. Operated by Lorry-Rail (of which the CFL are a shareholder), this infrastructure enables lorry trailers to be transported over long distances, thereby reducing CO2 emissions from freight transport.
- Thanks to CFL Intermodal’s rail freight activities, the emission of 114,000 tCO2e into the atmosphere has been avoided (2024).
- From north to south and east to west, Luxembourg’s rail network stretches over 628 km of track.
- The network is being expanded and modernised by the CFL, with substantial work on the country’s main stations, the creation of a new double-track line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg and the construction of new interchanges. In 2024, this work has resulted in net investments of 287.70 million euros (excluding VAT) on behalf of the Fonds du Rail (256.30 million in 2023).
- In existence since 1952, the CFL bus service covers 10 RGTR routes. It also offers the Luxemburg-Saarbrücken-Express route and the Gare Lorraine Express shuttle service.
- Safety is an absolute priority for both customers and staff, and is the focus of a specific culture built around a vision of ‘zero accidents’. This is an achievable goal, as demonstrated by the CFL technics teams who, on 21 December 2024, reached the milestone of 3 years without a lost time accident.
- No fewer than 25,000 applications were processed in 2024 by the Recruitment and Career Support Department of the country’s leading employer... which is still hiring.
