From lost property to found happiness

Dedicated to helping you recover an item lost on a train or in a station, the Lost Property Office at Luxembourg Station handles more than 10,000 cases a year. With the aim of maximising the number of successful outcomes.

Smartphones, bags, umbrellas and valuables… On their shelves, the staff of the CFL’s Lost Property Office list a vast array of goods that come to them as a result of the 1,000 daily movements of CFL trains.

Whether found by the accompanying staff or handed in by a customer, any item found on a train, at station, bus or the funicular at the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg stop is then forwarded to the long-established Lost Property Office at Luxembourg station, which also manages the luggage repository.

Technology at the customer’s service

Of the 10,000 or so files handled by the service in 2022, 5,580 lost property notices were opened and the same number of items inventoried using the Nova Find connected solution.

On the customer side, 4,772 lost property reports were received last year, including 2,895 via the cfl.lu website. Thanks to the search tool, also available online via Nova Find, customers can launch a search based on the characteristics they enter.

If the search is successful, the owners have one month to come and collect their item. In addition to using the online tool, many customers still come to the Lost Property Office counter to report a loss.

Of all the customers who contacted the service in 2022, 32% recovered their lost item. Unclaimed lost property is kept for 1 month.

Working with the police and social services

However, some items are never claimed. To avoid saturating the service’s stock while making a contribution to the community, orphaned items in good condition are donated to the “Spëndchen” Collection and Sorting Centre, which passes them on to social organisations (Caritas and the Red Cross).

Only valuables that are not taken back – which still account for 40% of lost property items – such as electronic devices or wallets, are forwarded three times a week to the Station Police Office.

This is invaluable work on the part of the CFL staff involved, who go out of their way to be of service to customers. It’s worth noting that some of the “objects” found are animals that pass through the station while waiting to be found by their owners, like this little goat that was left at the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg stop and was fortunately recovered a few minutes later by its owner….
