The topic of sustainability plays an important role for our society and our planet. At European level, climate-damaging CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 55% by 2030. This is an ambitious endeavour in which local public transport and, above all, the train will play a key role.
The transport sector still accounts for almost a quarter of CO2 emissions in Europe today. With a share of less than half a percentage point (0.4%), rail is the model student here. This is no coincidence, even in Luxembourg where the CFL Group is constantly campaigning for the decarbonisation of the transport sector. An inventory in pictures on the occasion of the World Day for Sustainable Transport, which takes place on 26 November 2024.
All passenger trains have been powered by electricity from renewable energy sources since 2008.Since 2024, the CFL have been purchasing 15% of their renewable electrical energy requirements from regionally produced solar power from Rhineland-Palatinate. This alone will save over 14,000 tonnes of CO2.New, modern and large-scale P+R facilities offer attractive incentives to leave the car behind and continue the journey by train, bus or tram. In 2023 alone, the CFL have provided 2,000 additional parking spaces.Green and photovoltaic systems are part and parcel of the construction of new facilities. The solar roof of the P+R Rodange car park produces up to 200,000 kWh per year (the equivalent of 5 round-the-world trips in an internal combustion engine car). · The Troisvierges P+R, due to open in early 2025, also has photovoltaic panels. The Troisvierges P+R, due to open in early 2025, also has photovoltaic panels.Hand in hand: easily combine bike and train thanks to one of the 60 bikeboxes installed at CFL stations and stops.Sustainable and at the same time FLEXIBLE: being able to use a car when you need to without being obliged to own one. No problem with CFL mobility’s flex-car sharing products. Nearly one in three vehicles are electric. In addition to the 12 electric buses already ordered, the CFL have recently ordered a further 12. By 2030, the entire CFL bus fleet should be electric.
Compared to road transport, rail consumes six times less energy for freight transport and emits nine times less CO2. In 2023 alone, over 86,000 lorries were shifted from road to rail and over 115,000 tonnes of CO2 were saved through CFL intermodal activities.
12 brand-new Traxx MS3 locomotives are equipped with hybrid drive and can therefore cover the last few metres in Europe’s freight hubs with their own power.State-of-the-art infrastructure and perfect positioning in the heart of Europe (with the intermodal terminal at Bettembourg-Dudelange) ensure the attractiveness of rail transport.
